Good programme on UK TV tonight asks that question, and continues by saying the Iranian President has promised to do just that!
Also Isreal is preparing for this battle!
What is your personal opinion on :-
Who will actually start this?
Will Isreal just sit by and wait to be attacked?
What, (if anything) will the United Nations do about it?
What will be the final outcome?
Plenty of questions there to mull over!

That is the ultimate aim of both sides but i do not think that Iran will attack Israel in the short-run.
UN did not and can not do anyhing except condemning use of arms-i dont think UN is an important international organization.
Iran is just introverted from the 1990s; trying to prevent a new US two pillars strategy; increasing its military power-prestige. before Iran experinced the isolation both from the world and Middle east muslim countries. now Iran is really a rich country (petroleum and gas incomes) and capable of surviving against a new isolation. so now altough it is Shite country, Iran succeeded to be the most powerful and prestigious country for all muslim sunna countries.(hamas-hizbullah)
Iran will not attack-Israel will.
i bet on that IRAN will win such a war and all middle east geography would change.
iran-us problem is a hereditary-vital-regime problem. iran tried and saw that (Rafsancani period) liberalization did not change us's manner towards iran. problem is regime problem. so this is a survival-live-vital matter and no concession will be given.
iran wants int society:) (if exists) would condemn first attack by israel. china is also a good ally of iran-so in the un china would veto a military act against iran.
just us-england-(may be denmark-canada) would support israel.
at the chicken point-threshold all muslim countries (and may be china-russia-india/at least would be impartial/) would support iran.
this is in the long run i think=in 7 years
and iran would win.

Considering that it is believe by many since IRAN openly supports hamas that they have attacked israel first, if it could be proven that IRANIAN operatives were killed or captured during the latest conflict then the debate would be settled.

Personally i feel this all ties into the war raging in the region and will end when one of two things happen

Iraq is reshaped and resolved into peace, iran is neutralized and made to be regional and internationaly more friendly to Western nations not just those that opose them. Israel can develop a Legit peacefull solution with it's neighbors, and the Palistinians can get their head out of the dirt and start doing more to help themselves then Israel will get more support from the Moderate Middle eastern countries after the PLO gets a Recognized country that has peace with Israel. (Too bad the Palistinians turned down the UN offer for their own country in the same time the Jews Took the Offer to recognize Israel) I really think if Israel and the Palistinians find a lasting peace then the Situation will bring moderate arab countries into the situation to end the Islamic agression.

Final outcome, to hard to say at this time, but unless nukes and drity bombs are dropped all over the region, on Europian nations that Support the Global war on terror, on the U.S. or the REST of the world rising up to support IRAN and the Axis of evil then the Western Civilization will come out on top

If this thing Goes Nuclear then Hello worldwide crissis cause there will be no end as to who launches them

Iran does not have the wherewithal to sustain a drawn out war with Israel on its own.

If internal political compulsions so dictate, it may launch some missiles, more for the consumption of the local electorate than anything else.

Israel is not likely to start anything like that unless it has foolproof information of impending attack on itself. It has nothing to gain- politically or materially.

The UN? it's now, more than ever, but an American puppet. It will do no more than condemn an Israeli attack, if at all it happens, or impose sanctions and order an 'Interantional' force (read US and allies) to quell Iran.

Final Outcome? The US military presence in Iran in the garb of "international" community, with a greater control of Oil in it's hands.

if iran attacks israel they are morons israels entire existance has been marked by nothing more than violence by her neighbors and also israel is the #2 nation in the world as far as nuclear warheads are concerned 1 of course is the US. Russia after the fall of the soviet union dismantled or as most believe unofficially sold all of her nuclear warheads. Israel could turn every muslim nation around her into a parking lot and nothing more. Also you must look at the 1972 Munich olympics where 9 muslim terrorist working for Black September killed 11 Israeli atheletes. Israels response was one that we should've adopted after 9/11. They sent a team of 4 operatives to "neutralize" the enemies of Israel 8 high profile terrorist deaths later Black September was no more. The question i have is who responded more correctly Israel on Sept 5 1972 Munich Germany or the US Sept 11 2001 New York City, United States of America?

There's no point for Iran to attack Israel but this is a scenario like 911 conspiracy that would open the gates of Armageddon (a stupid racist myth). More countries than anticipated already possess WMD of some form and pinpointing Iran is more like a cold war era propaganda to keep the people on tip of their toes and justify military spending..But if we wake up and spend half the budget spent on arms race today on human welfare, we'll have a heaven on earth in less than a decade.

No and the Iranian President did NOT say that, He never said he would destroy it. He said Israel should never have existed.

Iran will not attack Israel, UNLESS Iran is attacked. IF Iran was attacked (either by or at the behest of Israel) then all bets are off. If Iran was attacked then for sure it would attack Israel, and who would blame it? The one reason why Iran was being attacked is Israel's paranioa!

But would Iran pre-emptively attack Israel? not a cat in hell's chance, for if that did happen, Iran's leadership knows that Tehran would be instantly turned to green glass. Israel has 200 nukes! It would be suicide.

Its possible, but extremely unlikely, depending on how you see it.

If this was a bet, my money's on the IDF (Israeli Defence Force). Firstly, Iran's military forces won't last 2 weeks on the battle against Israel (that is already being overly generous).

If the Israelis can prevail in a fight outnumbered and win all by itself, Iran would be a piece of cake. Should Iran choose to do so, it would merely be an early duck hunting season for the Israelis.

Iran must not attack Iran because it could ignite a war involving many nations. UN must immediately put a stop to wars.
