It could get infected and all your food will taste like pus for a while.
That's about it.

Well maybe you should reconsider your choice if there is so much fear involved. Post a question asking what piercing you would look good with on here ? (not that you need anyone else`s thoughts) Anyway , i don`t personally have my tongue pierced but i know many people who do , and i know alot about piercings. For the pain , it all depends on your pain tolerence, if you have low p.t. then it is probley going to hurt quiet abit.. if you have high p.t. then you have NO worries , some people says its just a little sting and its fine. The swelling lasts at least a week , but it will be worth it. You just have to eat soft foods , and again it depends on you, it might not even swell for more then a day. Make sure you go to a certified , experienced piercer , who has done tongue piercings before! Don`t get it to high up. Look up pictures , ask the piercer , and think where YOU want it first. Infections arn`t common because your mouth is clean. Which means mouth wash after everything you eat, and wash it as much as possible. Also if it was that dangorous would so many people have it.. exactly. So don`t be so scared its not all that bad (: have fun , and do all this first ! hope i helped.

It's not dangerous at all if you go to a reputable piercer. Make sure you are happy with the person doing it, have a chat to them and explain your fears etc. Also check that their needles etc all come out of new packets and all other instruments are properly sterilised (including the jewellery they put in).

Recently there was a convention held by piercers to discuss whether it is dangerous to have a tongue piercing. Several eminent dentists were invited to have their say. None showed up to fight their corner. I have four of my 22 piercings are in my tongue and there is nothing wrong with my teeth at all - no enamel damage, no cracking. Yes it hurts to get it done, it's sore for about a week afterwards, but no pain no gain!
To the person who said not to get it done because it isn't fashionable any more... who wants to be the same as everyone else? That's the very reason you SHOULD get it done, because you'll be more unique!

You can get an infection, and if the piercer isn't a professional he can hit a nerve in the middle of your tongue which will paralyze your face, but that like 1 out of a million chances. It's not really THAT dangerous. If you swallow the jewelry your not gonna die. Your tongue is a muscle so it's heals it self pretty quick.

Good luck!

Like with anything like this there is a risk. It could get infected.

I had mine done years ago, and the place I went to numbed it was amazingly clean and hygienic. (I thought I was in surgery!!)
There was slight swelling to the toungue, which again is another risk, and I had to be careful what I ate for a few days, then it was fine.

I know some piercings have gone horribly wrong.

I dont know if this is just a rumor, but I heard that a girl went for a tongue piercing and they pierced through her main tongue muscle and now she cant speak.I also heard it is bad for your teeth enamel when you play with it and it hits against your teeth, it scrapes off the enamel. Other than that I dont think it is that dangerous or risky. I know alot of people who have it.

I would say reasonably dangerous. I had my tongue pierced, after 2wks ya supposed to go back to the shop that did the piercing and get the bar changed for a smaller one, (they put a longer bar in to allow for swelling) Every time they tried to put a smaller bar in my tongue swelled, for 3mths this went on. Until one time my tongue swelled so much, i had to go to hospital to get the bar cut out cos it had lost itself inside my tongue!!!

If you follow the directions to the letter there is virtually no risk to it at all. If you are on the lazy side I don't recommend it as I have seen tongues go black, fill with pus and it is very painful.

its painful, not dangerous.

As long as you get your piercing done at a reputable piercing studio and keep it clean - care for it as directed by your piercer, you'll be fine.

Not very. You can get an infection like with any other piercing, but if you take care of it you will be fine!
Even if you swallow the jewellry you will be fine
