He always ordered a scoth and something. Sounded like scotch and thret or thread or thred. Is it some kind of mixer?

It's scotch with just a "threat" of water - meaning just a bit.
Now come on, how could you DO this to me? I'm in Canada, and Coronation Street just celebrated New Years, so you can see how far behind we are in seeing the episodes. So now I know that he's dead, how am I going to watch his sweet overbite every day? Who will take over his place to repeat everything twice? Thought he and Beverley might have a go at it.... No more spoilers, please!

When Fred Elliot ordered a scotch and threat he was requesting a scotch whisky and a small amount of water. It is referred to as a threat as you only want the scotch "threatened" by the water ie. a very small amount and not enough to drown the flavour of the whisky.

A Scotch and threat is a Scotch whiskey with just the slightest drop of water- ie- you THREATEN the spirit with the water, but don't actually add enough to take the edge off it.
