most would say that it means they believe that the original writings were inspired by God, and there for contains special knowledge. One who is a true believer can in what might be described as a magical way retrieve this knowledge as that one is ready to accept it often different truths from the same scripture as the knowledge and understanding grows the more one reads, but if you do not go through the process of justification and reconciliation not only will you not be able to attain that knowledge even if one trys to tell you you will not understand and so not be able to appropriate it into your walk. This leaves one in the state of asking perpetual questions and when they receive the answers it just causes further frustration,, you know what i mean????

It means that he trusts, accepts and applies what is written in the Bible. That is saying a lot because some who say they believe are going contrary to what the Bible says. For instance, Isa. 2:4 says that we are to figuratively "beat our swords into plowshares and our spears into pruning hooks." The same verse says we are not even to LEARN war anymore. Instead of fighting and killing our fellowman, Jesus said at John 13:35 that love would be an identifying mark of true Christianity. He even said that we are to love our enemies. Do we find all who profess to believe the Bible follow these principles? Of course not. Look at the thousands of "believers" in the military who go out and kill their fellow humans because some politician who is also a "believer" tells them to. And don't forget the clergymen who give the troops a "legitimate" reason to go out and kill. Oh, and did I say they are "believes" of the Bible too? Believing in the Bible means just that. Whatever you read in it you trust, accept and apply what it says. Plus nothing.

There are two ways this word could be interpreted, one of which totally misses the point, and the other which hits the target dead-on. Some people think it's enough just to believe the facts contained in the Bible: God made us. Jesus is His Son. We are all sinners. Etc. But if those things are nothing more than just trivia answers we regurgitate but that don't change our lives, what good does it do us? It doesn't. I believe that JFK was president back in the 1960s, but how does that change my life? JFK is nothing more than a trivia answer for me--I wasn't alive then, I never knew the man, so he could have no real impact on my life.

What matters most is that "believing" in the Bible as we were meant to do is that we trust in it, put our faith in not just a set of facts, but that we base our lives upon this. I don't just believe the fact that Jesus was the Son of God; I trust Him to forgive my sin and I base my life upon His life. It's one thing to believe a set of facts, but another thing to entrust my life to the truth behind them. There's a bridge that goes over the river about half a mile from my house. I can say that I believe this bridge will help me cross the river safely. I can stand by the bridge and tell myself all day long that this bridge will help me cross the river and not drown. But if I never put my trust in this bridge and find out that it will in fact keep me from falling into the river, the fact that I believe the bridge will keep me from drowning in the river does absolutely nothing for me unless I put that belief into action. So I believe that Jesus is the Son of God--what good does it do me to agree to a set of facts about Him unless I know Him personally and am willing to trust not just that a bunch of facts about Him are true but that He can and will forgive my sin if I ask Him and am truly sorry? It won't do me a bit of good unless my faith is more than just a bunch of facts. If my faith isn't the thing that shapes my life, if it's not the foundation of my life, then I might believe a bunch of facts about the Bible, but until I am willing to trust my life to it, all I've got is a bunch of trivia, not belief that leads to trust, and trust that leads to a changed life. The biggest problem among Christians today is that we've got too many who say they believe stuff about Jesus and about the Bible, but they aren't willing to put their trust in Jesus and aren't willing to let the Bible become more than just trivia answers in their lives.

You won't find too many people who have ever picked up a Bible let alone read one. Its just a way of saying you're a Christian (tongue in cheek).

It usually means they don't have the answer for your question and want you to search for it in the Bible yourself.
