China has the numerical advantage in its land forces but no real power in its naval and air forces.

In a supposedly all out conflict between the United States and the PRC, it will depends on the location of where the battle takes place. The United States will practically dominate the air and naval spectrum of the conflict. In those two battlespace, we have no equal.

The tricky part will come from the battle fought on land. In such a case, the PLA will mostly adopt Soviet style doctrine for land based warfighting, employing mass and speed. Spearheading these assaults will be any of one of the Type A army units in its various military regions, most notably those in the Beijing and Shengyang Military Region (MR).

Type B army units will probably come from the Chengdu and Nanjing MR. These will act as follow on units once a successful breach has been made in the opposing forces lines.

Type C army units (reserves and wartime draftees) will act as reinforcement should the need be necessary.

As for US ground forces, the land battle will be a joint undertaking by both the US Army and US Marine Corps, with follow-on support from the National Guards and Reserves. Because of the ability of the US Air Force to dominate (or at least maintain superiority) over the enemy's airspace, it will also partake in the ground battle but only to a certain extent. CAS and BAI would be the most undertaken tasking of all, with CAP being conducted at the same time.

Both side will (most likely) refrain from deploying nuclear weapons of any kind due to the proximity of friendly troops.

In respond to Chris C's answer, the PRC would most likely sustain its logistics line via trains. Because the PRC does not have many well developed and connected land roads and highways, its only means to resupply frontline units would be via railways.

That however, would also be one of the top targets on the list. The attack will be initiated most likely by the US Navy by the way of Tomahawks or JASSM or other means of stand-off weapon systems.

Like the plan used by CENTCOM in the first Gulf War, first we cut them off. Then we kill them. This is done in the hope of forcing a premature end to the conflict.

And yes, there is no doubt that the PLA has no creditable means to maintain a long supply line in any case, with the exception of within its own national border.

While I have to agree with the Pilots assesment with a nice smile for the specifics I would also like to throw into the question of where the battle would take place?

Because I dont believe it would be possible from a logistics standpoint that china could effectively support a war in China let alone anywhere else in the world. They just dont have the capbalities to get their people in many places without alot of people walking,

If it was fought conventially then I think china would be hard pressed to win even in their own country...Your talking about having the needed stockpiled Supplies such as Food, water, Ammo, Medical Supplies, NBC gear(Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) just in case it came to it, etc....

Now the U.S. would struggle with many of those options as well, but Logistically speaking I think we would more likely be able to pull it off, but the need for Air and Water Superiority would be the only way the guys on the ground would stand a chance, cause if they can hamper the planes in the air and ships at sea then Logistics and fighting power would render the men on the ground almost to being useless without that support

Your Q looked grobal. By the way, I love to give you the ans. US military is far more better than China to all aspects but not the number of sevice and supported soldiers. The US population was about 200 M but China has about 1200 M.Before leave, the China military is about 1/5 of the US

USA has more nuclear arms, more ships, more planes and armored weapons.
China's only superiority is the number of soldiers. The ratio is 2 to 1.

in a direct comparison China would be less than one third, probably less than one fifth, as militarily powerful as the US.
