I have problem falling asleep at night. I'm not working and there's no way i'm stressed. I started doing yoga but it's not helping. I usually can't sleep till around 4 a.m. My friend have suggested me to drink little bit of red wine before bedtime to put me to sleep. I don't drink so it sounds something new to me. My question is, what are the disadvantages of drinking red wine everyday before bedtime? Can i gain weight from it? Any other suggestions to put me to sleep besides pills?

I'm not use to drinking, so I'm thinking of having 3 sips a day before bedtime, is that too much/little?!?!

Drinking wine before bed will only work in the short term. It is a depressant and can make you sleepy but after a while it will actually disrupt your sleep patterns rather then helping you sleep. You'd be better off to talk to your doctor and doing what he says. Also, exercise will help you sleep better at night. Something more strenuous then Yoga though.

I like to have a little bit of a fino (dry) or even a cream sherry before bed. It lasts longer than opening up a bottle of red wine and I find it relaxing. Weight gain is a possibility, but I just cut down on my carbs, sugars and etc. to balance it out.

My mom used to put frangelico liqueur into tea and I find that works too. I think the "Sleepy Time" tea one with the bear on the box works best. Good Luck :)

There are good and bad reports in the News all the time and drinking wine. Just remember all things in moderation. It can't hurt! Also, try a glass of warm milk. Motion sickness tablets are a non-addictive sleeping pill!

there is no way a little red wine can do you harm (health-wise) research actually shows that drinking a glass of wine a day is actually GOOD for you!!!! just dont get drunk and hurt yourself

for me? some good sex does it good.... i sleep like a baby!

oh! if you decide to try wine, make sure you find one you like! if at first sip you think you dont like wine, think again!!! try lots of them, there is one for each person

you may also try a warm cup of milk or tea, that usually makes people sleepy!!

another thing.... you said you are not working which leads me to believe that you wake up LATE in the day.... try this: start waking up between 8 and 8:30am, have breakfast and workout/excercise for an hour, then go about your regular day. in a week you will be going to bed between 10 and 12pm! just make sure you wake up early!!

Try drinking a little warm milk before bedtime. or put a few drops of lavender oil / bathsalts in your bath. Red wine is not bad for you, although I won't drink more than one glass per day.

I did the red wine thing and it helped me out big time. I used those small bathroom cups and drank one at night. It's also great for reducing blood pressure and cholesterol. (so I've been told) Wine is much better than liquor or beer and it shouldn't make you gain weight since you are only drinking a very small amount.

Research scientists in North Carolina have announced discovery of how a chemical found in red wine helps to fight cancer.

The study may help explain the controversial "French paradox," the apparent lower rates of heart disease and some cancers among the French, despite a typical national diet high in fat.

Compared to other nationalities in Europe, the French eat more beef, cheese, butter and other artery-clogging foods. But they also drink more wine, and researchers have speculated that certain compounds in grapes and grape products like wine offer some kind of protection from the negative effects of the high-fat diet.

The new research identified the workings of a key cancer-related substance: trans-Resveratrol, often called Res.

In addition to red grapes, Res is found in mulberries, raspberries, peanuts, muscadine grapes, including scuppernongs, and many other fruits and nuts, said the research scientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

"A couple of years ago, a group at the University of Illinois found that Res has both anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties," said nutritional biologist Minnie Holmes-McNary, Ph.D., an author of the North Carolina study. "The question then became how does it exert its effects, and that’s what we show in our paper."

Why would someone be rude?
I wouldn't use alcohol. I work second shift and can't get to sleep till around 5 am. I need to find something else to keep me busy during the day.

Find a hobby that stimulates your mind. I've built some cool stuff around the house in the last month.

The best way to sleep at night is to exercise during the day. 3 sips of wine is not going to do anything.

I would discuss your problem with your doctor before starting to drink! There are several non-habit forming sleeping pills these days that sound a lot safer than developing a dependency on alcohol!
