1. We stop fearing anything after understanding it. For example - we stop fearing darkness after we understand that darkness is just due to light being obstructed by an opaque object.
2. If we understand that God is just a concept made by human imagination - we stop fearing God.
3. We then can ask the question - what do we really need 'fear' or 'self-confidence'? If we come to the conclusion that we actually need 'self-confidence' - then we start researching/thinking about how can self-confidence be achieved.
4. Self-confidence is achieved by understanding existence, its purpose, and our own role in the existence. Fear of all kinds is unnecessary for human being.

It's doesn't mean fearing Him in the sense of being scared, it means fear Him in reverence, because He is the One that created everything, including you.

Because we are intelligent? Atomic bombs, volcanoes, hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes,to name a few, terrorize millions of simple beings in this spec of the universe called Earth. The inter galactic forces in comparison to our world are like the effects of a hundred atomic bombs dropped on a flea. And the Universe (our only possible analogy with God) is so much larger than the galaxies.
I know that there are brave men there, that are not afraid of anything. I call them morons, because their ignorance is so out of proportion with reality that they don't bother to to think past their breakfast table.

I don't fear god... I don't fear Santa or the Easter Bunny either. When things don't exist, there's no reason to fear them. :-)

fearing G-d is like fearing your own powerlessness. all of a sudden, you realize that you don't matter. there are things way bigger than you out there, and you're nothing more than an intelligent atom in a vast universe you can't control.

Fiction rises from the imagination and there are lots of fearsome things that lurk in the imagination as well as nice things...so this is why some of us fear the fictional God because we imagine he can do some pretty nasty stuff.
