Having just read an answer from someone about not being able to walk their dogs in the dark because of Bears and coyotes etc it got me wondering , how do you cope with this type of wildlife? The scariest wildlife I have to deal with where I live are Adders and then only when it is hot (I don't take my dogs out when it is really hot, only early morning and late eve), and possibly the odd human lurking on the common, I can't imagine what it would be like to have to watch out for BEARS!! Do you get used to it and deal (like the adders thing) or are you terrified every time you go out of your house? Thanks

I live in Montana, on the outskirts of a small city in the Rocky Mountains. Black bears do come into residential areas. Most dogs know that they should stay back away from a bear and most bears can hear dogs coming, so there aren't usually problems. Occasionally there are mountain lion attacks on dogs. Dogs will go after mountain lions as dogs generally perceive a threat to their owners, obviously a small dog would be a snack. A Lab sized dog could chase most lions.

The biggest problems are with dogs chasing deer or like animals. the dogs may get lost and it is against the law for dogs to chase deer. It is legal to shoot dogs if they chase deer.

I have heard from a friend who lived out of town with her two female dogs, that coyotes would try to lure the two dogs to separate in the woods near her cabin. She was sure the coyotes wanted to kill the dogs separately. The dogs didn't fall for it.

In National Parks, like Glacier or Yellowstone where even grizzlies may be somewhat habituated to humans, dogs are allowed only on leash. They are not allowed in the back country ever anymore in the Parks. I have never heard of problems in wilderness areas with dogs. I am not sure if dogs are allowed there or not.

I have had dogs take off in the forest before. They always came back OK. One was very frightened.

Snakes are a problem since dogs tend to be curious. I bet that scorpions are trouble for dogs, too.

I'd be too scarred to live in those areas were they have bears, coyotes and the like, I just can't imagine going out of a night to take my dog for a walk in amongst them can you, I prefer been able to just walk across the moors with my dog and just see the odd horseman/woman on the country lanes.

I lived in the woods for 3+ years, and there were many bears.. they won't bother you if you don't bother them..(except for the grizzly, but he is not here) coyotes are cowards, wolves keep their distance, I do worry some about cougars..(mountain lions) However, my breed would be OK (safe) with them..I only met one once, as he was walking down to the water and ignored us..

We don't have Grizzlies here but we do have Black Bears and the occasional Mountain Lion. They tend to try to stay away from people, but you never know...

I have done alot of traveling by canoe in the Boundary Waters Wilderness and always used to carry one of those canned air horns, like they use on boats, to scare away any unwanted visitors. I have heard horror stories from people who thought they didn't REALLY have to hang their packs though. Sucks to have no food supply left because of Bears and have three days travel to get out!
