Both Marc and Kandinsky were co-founders of the pre-WW1 group "Die Blaue Reiter". Like many schools of this period allegiances changed quickly and artists often belonged to more than one school. They would synthesise these influences and ideas into their personal style. it is difficult to compare these artists because for only a short period would their styles be vaguely similar. eg: in their early period both Marc and Kandinsky painted romantic, figurative works. Kandinsky moving on to his abstractions while Marc became more expressionistic and increased the intensity of his colour, due to the influence of Delaunay. You need to look at the social history of this period to better understand why styles changed so rapidly.Europe was in a state of political disintegration and the dramatic social changes were reflected in the artist's work.

Kandinsky was a Russian artist, abstract, Marc was German and Matisse was a French impressionist. How would you compare apples and oranges?
