Am I weak and controlled if I learn that it is wrong to lie, steal, kill, live life lusting, to be jealous of what other people have, disrespect my mom, say hurtful things, do hurtful things, and believe that there is a force greater then me that loves me, and I call that force Jesus?

Please don't say I believe in God because someone convinced me. I'm to smart to just buy words. I question everything. God proved Him self, not some preacher.

No, you're not weak and controlled. I believe all of those things (except the last two) and I'm an atheist. Knowing how to make good choices, respect others, controlling our emotions, being honest, etc., are things that all people learn if they have attentive parents and good teachers.

I know what you're getting at though... Christians must be weak and controlled if they believe, but how could knowing the 10 commandments make you weak. My point is that it's great that Christians know those rules but in MY OWN EXPERIENCE (I do not speak for anyone else but myself), the Christians I run into are less likely to follow those commandments than the non-believers I know.

Your mileage, as always, will vary.

Just that last part.
Contrary to what you might think, christians don't have a monopoly on teaching morality. Even those of us that don't believe in god feel it's wrong to steal, lie, etc. (though you'll get a lot of disagreement about the "lusting" idea) -- but not because god tells us it's wrong, simply because we're humanists...we respect our fellow human beings and don't want to harm them.

As for believing there is a force greater than you that loves you...since there is no evidence of that whatsoever, you must believe it because other people have convinced you that it's true despite the complete lack of evidence. So yes, you're allowing yourself to be controlled by the ideas of others, and that is a weakness. Were you to think for yourself, and objectively and with reason examine the world as it really is, you'd arrive at a different conclusion.

You are not weak and controlled for believing that. Some Christians (as well as other religious people) are weak and controlled if they rely on another person for their faith and morals. As long as you depend on God and His Word and your own judgment more than the words of a preacher or teacher, you are your own person.

Everyone is weak and controlled already by some form of slavery. Jesus is the one who gives you your freedom.
