"The Ark of the Covenant (ארון הברית in Hebrew: aron habrit) is described in the Hebrew Bible as a sacred container, wherein rested the stone tablets containing the Ten Commandments. The Ark was built at the command of God, in accord with Moses's prophetic vision on Mount Sinai (Exodus 25:9-10). Its primary function was for God to communicate with Moses, "from between the two cherubim" on the Ark's cover (Exodus 25:22). The Ark and its sanctuary were "the beauty of Israel" (Lamentations 2:1). Rashi and some Midrashim suggest that there were two arks - a temporary one made by Moses and a later one made by Bezalel (Hertz 1936)."

Let's not forget that a portion of Manna was in there too, the wafer like food from heaven that God provided to sustain the Israelites in the desert.

Some say the ark is now in Ethiopia, but the Bible has it hidden away in a cave by Jeremiah, somewhere on Mt. Nebo, awaiting the return of Christ.

All this is about the Ark of the Old Covenant.

The Blessed Virgin Mary has Traditionally been known as the Ark of the New Covenant, because it was she who carried the Son of God in her womb for nine months .... altogether a much more significant achievement than was the first ark.

the ark of the covenant was the symbol of God's mighty presence in the old testament. it is a box with winged angels facing each other on top, it has poles on either side which is used to carry the ark when the israelites travel. inside the ark there was the tablets of stones where the ten commandments are and moses' rod.

"It's a radio for speaking to god!" -- Bellach, "Raiders of the Lost Ark"

How come god needed a golden box to talk to Moses (or a burning bush, or anything else)? Why couldn't he just talk to him? Isn't he all-powerful? Does anybody really think god made moses build a golden box to carry around a bunch of dust from broken stones and to make it easier to talk to him? Isn't it much more likely that Moses made it so it would appear that he had special powers and could talk to god through his magic box, even though he made it all up?

A golden box which held the 10 commandments. It was carried by the Hebrews and kept in a Holy of Holies tent. It was decorated with winged angels and could only be seen by the priests.

kindness,
It was a type of Christ. If my memory serves, it had: Unbroken tablets of the Ten Commandments, (signifying that the only one who could keep them perfectly was Jesus Christ, Aaron's rod that was dead and yet budded (signifying that the Christ would die but live again). The covering or lid was a type of Mercy (the Mercy Seat), when it was removed one time, many people died, meaning that the covering was essential to the salvation, if removed it would cause God's Wrath to be exposed to sinning flesh.

What people miss about the Old Testament sometimes, eh?
