we (humans) are the best running machines on the planet. We are actually designed to run long distance and can (with proper training) out distance any other land mammal. Amazed? You should be. Point is if you are physically able, Running will get the maximum output from your legs over all. It is what they are designed to do. It will also make your butt hard as a drum because running puts extreme use on the glutious maximus (prolly spelled that wrong, spell checker couldnt fix it)

I, personally, walk and ride bike and find that it keeps my legs well muscled. The more hills, the more you work those legs. I would also suggest buying the Firm's "Standing Legs." Lots of step-ups (you can use a chair rather than buy their step) and squats. As someone who has never done much running (and always had muscular legs) I don't run and understand that any pounding on those knees isn't a good thing.

Riding the bike. I do all 3. For pure strenght, try putting the bike in high gear and peddling up hill. If you're doing spinning, that little resistance roller is your friend (and enemy).

For leg strength, you should get a barbell and weights and do some squats and dead lifts. Just running isn't going to do enough to really force the muscles to grow.

You may also want to include swimming in the equation. But if you're looking to build mass, you're also going to need to hit the gym and do leg exercises
