You can go to Target or Walmart and in the toys they have tons of board games for that age group, I'm 27 and still love to play those games.

A game my son LOVES to this day at age 12 is to take turns starting with A and come up with a word to match. For example, he always wants to go first so he would say something like -Apple, then I would say Bubble, then he would say cat, etc. This game can help the child learn in so many ways with variations, like when the child gets more comfortable with the alphabet, you can do categories such as animals or movies, songs, etc. Also, you can say funny/silly words to make him laugh when it is your turn, but my favorite thing was to use words that he didn't know the meaning of, b/c then I would explain the meaning and later I would find that he used the words in conversations. Good Luck!

2 awesome games my 2nd grader loves and they are learning on top of it - Clue, Jr. or we play a games where I'm the cashier and I give her like $2 in change. I place 10 items on the counter and price them - like $.33 and she has to come buy it. She's learning money and it's fun for her - easy for you you just sit and take the money. I only let her buy 1 item at a time. If your short on time, just do a few items.

"What if", "I spy" and "I'm thinking of" games are great for this age!
Here's some examples:
What if you found a magic lamp, What if you won the lottery, What if your were President.
I spy something that is pink....just make sure that it is really something they can see and find.
I'm thinking of something that starts with the letter B and it is a thing. The child asks questions (Can you play with it, Can you hold it, Is it man made?)
Kids this age are so much fun because there imaginations are growing so rapidly! Have fun with it !!!

My son is in 2nd grade and loves to play Monopoly Jr., Yahtzee, Yahtzee Jr. Uno, Ker Plunk, Mario Baseball on gamecube (my favorite). I have found that he really doesn't care what we do as long as we are having "OUR TIME!"

Apples to Apples, Candyland.
And card ganes are fun and inexpensive.
Chances are you already have some laying around the house.
Also, if they don't like whatever card game you're playing at the moment, then you can easily switch games.
It's a win win situation to me.
