As an atheist who believes that Jesus was a person who actually lived, I could not have stood by and allowed him to struggle with that cross. I would have helped him.
Edit: For Elmo above me....I would help anyone in that situation. You seem nice enough. Would you not do the same?

No, I would not like helping Jesus carry his cross. Jesus was a cult leader who demanded that his disciples HATE their mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and even themselves. Luke 14:26. He got what he deserved. Jesus stated that he was God to the High Priest judging him in Mark 14:62, and that the High Priest would see Jesus coming in the clouds on the right hand of Glory. This never happened. The High Priest is dead. He's not gonna see anything.
Jesus's sacrifice was based on sacrifices of animals done in the Old Testament before the Jews were subjugated by the Babylonians and then later by the Romans. Back then, the Jews were rich enough to burn bulls as sacrifices. They believed that God loved the smell of a burning bull. This is all rubbish. The idea that something has to die to please God or atone for some sin that was committed is a purely human idea. God does not demand any sacrificial death at all. Therefore, Jesus's death was meaningless. It did not save anyone.
Ezekiel 18, a great chapter of the OT, tells us that God will save our soul if we give up our sinful ways and live a righteous life. Therefore we don't need Jesus's sacrifice at all to get our soul saved.
Jesus constantly lied about the timing of his supposed return to earth. In Matt 16:27-28 he told his listeners that some of the people standing there would still be alive when he returned, accompanied, by an angel to judge every man according to his works. This was a lie. Those people are all dead, and still no Jesus.
In Matt 24:34, Jesus said all the signs and events of the 2nd coming would be fulfilled before the generation his original 12 disciples lived in passed away. Another lie.
In Matt 10:22-23 Jesus told his disciples that they would not have time to preach the gospel to all the Israeli cities before Jesus came back for the 2nd coming. Lie.
No, I would not have liked carrying a liar's cross.

I'm sure he didn't like it at the time, but he may very well have cherished the memory for the rest of his life.
Jesus could easily have escaped or avoided his death. It was the reason he was sent to us, so it had to be carried out.

Most Christians can't stay off the cross. I think Christ has enough weight to carry without Christians adding to it.
