Sterilization. Joseph Lister used to deliver babies on the same tables that they'd just had a corpse on, and when babies started constantly dying he suggested that the doctors wash their hands between patients and clean the area -- I think you can imagine the rest of this story, with them laughing at him and telling him to stuff it.

In medicine, probably penicillin. Before its widespread use, more soldiers died of infection than directly from wounds. We would still be dying from tonsillitis if not for penicillin.
In general health, the invention of the closed sewer, almost immediately after its use started in London, sanitation improved and cholera and other diseases were eliminated.
Invention which has served us the most: probably either telephone or radio, allowing communication over long distances.
