Before I hear all the crap about why breed the dog. I didn't she was brought to us to foster after she had been removed from abusive owners. She had 4 puppies and one chihuahua puppy has to be bottle fed. She was doing wonderful then today she just crashed. She won't eat. I took her to the vet along with the rest of the litter. They are almost 1 lb each but the baby is only 4 oz. The vet told us to use karo and she perked up some and ate but now it is 6 hrs later and she is refusing to eat again. I have forced her with a dropper. But she is still very listless. The mom has been very good about cleaning her and trying to get her to nurse, but now she is pushing her away so I removed her to her own box so I can keep her warm. Any idea that the vet hasn't given us? I am stuck I have never had puppies.

You need to do several things to imitate what the mother dog does.
1. Teach the runt pup to suck. Wipe the syrup onto her tongue, have her lick it from your pinkie, dribble it with the eyedropper into her throat. Get some puppy milk formula. You can also try expressing some of the mother dog's milk and feed it to the puppy.

2. Use a wet cotton ball and swipe the puppy's anus to encourage her to defecate. This is very important, as important as feeding her. Cotton cosmetic squares work well too.

3. Keep the runt puppy very warm. You may need to hold her all the time, wrapped in a washcloth tucked into your blouse. She really needs the physical contact.

4. There may be another reason why the mother dog is rejecting the runt pup. She may have some congenital defect you and the vet can't discover, but she senses.

Good luck!

I too just bought a puppy! My vet said that you should feed it 3 times a day, just like you should eat. Make sure it is puppy food, others are too harsh for the puppy's system! Keep them on puppy food for at least a year! And let the puppy eat as much as he wants for 15 minutes, after 15 mins pick up food until next feeding! Good luck! Make sure you take the puppy outside like 20 mins afters feeding to go potty, also as soon as he wakes up take him out right away this will help with potty training. Our puppy is nine weeks old and asks to go outside already!

The sad thing, there might not be anything you can do. Puppies, mainly newborns, will become that way for no real reason. Much like human babies fall victim to SIDS. Make sure the bottle is warm! um, if you can (and I know this sounds a little gross..) Try to "milk" the mom, like a human mom would, and give the puppy that milk. If it works, everytime you feed her, mix a little of her puppy formula with moms milk till its all formula and no momma milk. I tried it with a kitten once, and it worked!

Be sure to keep her warm! If she gets cold, she could be done for. Keep a warm lamp near her, hotwater bottle underher, or even a heating pad.

But remember, the mother might have pushed her away because she knew the puppy wasn't going to survive. But, if you try hard enough, she will do fine! I hope it helped.

Have you tried to mash the dams utter & open puppies mouth to get to suck? Move the others away while doing this so if it will eat it can.or-Try feeding her baby formula + add alittle karo to it.....keep the puppy warm...Feed every 2 hours if you have to..If it starts to cry--it's called a death cry. Hard to bring one back if this starts.
I've lost a few in my time (30 yrs). I fault w/them til the end & still cried.
I could always tell from looking at the pads of the feet, if they were going to make it.
GOOD LUCK!
