I don't believe that the Bible is the Word of God, but I'll go ahead and quote the Bible verse in case any of you Christians are interested in where this is in the Bible:
"He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him." -- Proverbs 13:24

I wasn't whipped with a board nor beaten. A belt or a switch...you better believe it. I wasn't a bad child but I would do un-necessary things. I knew better...just curious. I think that it made me a better person. I never went to jail.....never even thought about killing anyone. I only stole a pack of gum from the store when I was 11 and boy did I get it when I got home, so I never did that again. I have much respect for older people and I still say yes ma'am and no sir out of respect. It wasn't so bad growing up. Maybe that's what some young people need now. the world might be a lot better off.

I was spanked as a child, as well as my sibling. We are fine upstanding decent adults with no problems, arrests, domestic violence under our belts. we are happily married etc etc. I think nowadays.. all this spoiling of children is making more monsters.. Look at the crime lately and the lack of discipline and curruption etc.. No humanity left it seems.. Before yes there was crime, but far less. Take the 50's or 60's for ex.. You got in trouble at school, the teacher spanked you, probably the principal did too. A note was sent home, your Mom took her turn. and said as she spanked you. Just wait till your father gets home.. He took his turn when he got home.. You knew your place, you took it, reformed and didnt do the action further.. All was well.. These days, if a teacher doesnt like you, she doesnt discipline you. Just maybe says some words, (oh, harrassment, call the counselor for a meeting). Takes away points. (how dare she, your actions doesnt merit points taken away from perfect school work).. again.. call the counselor.. maybe your mother thinks about callin the lawyer for advice on your harrassment issues at school. ... 3rd. the teacher has all she can stand, you get sent to the office, and get 3 days suspention. and your parents are livid.. they sue the school, you get reestated and are even awarded a monitary amount for your suffering...maybe you come to school in a week with a gun and shoot some teachers and students... I know this is an exageration.. But see my point.. These days children are spoiled beyond spoiling... .. I had first hand experience when I sat in on a daycare class for an ill friend. These were 3, 4 and 5year olds.. I spent half the day teaching manners.. an example was after meal time. the kids threw their trash on the table and floor. and when I asked them to pick it up.. One smart elec yelled" why? my maid does this at home".. They thought of me as a maid, not a teacher.. SEE?... I think this child would do well with a good old spanking and forced to pick up after himself.. Next time he wouldnt think twice about dumping his trash in the can...

Mormons, Amish and Jehova's Witnesses do that, I have heard.
I am absolutely disgusted by the american attitude of putting the "freedom of religion" higher than the welfare of children. As long as they do it as a religious tradition, no prosecutor will step in. I have read terrible stories about amish cildren who were beaten with chains, blood was getting on walls, or children left in august sun for 10 hours without water etc. No police, no prosecutor, nobody stepped in, because they don't dare to mess with them.
I am an abused child, now 43, and they were atheists. Child abusers are not only church members. I think those who want to do that will find a reason, make one up if they can't find one, and only the christians will explain it with religious excuses (like that evil bible vers someone has quoted previously).
How it effected my ife? It destroyed me. The memory is still with me everyday, is haunting me, and if there was a way to get revenche on these people, I would get an axe and cut them into pieces. I have thoughts like that often.
Unfortunately no judge would grant me the right to kill those who have destroyed me, and in therapy (during the 80s) I have learned that it would not help me at all. I would spend 15 years in prison (I am german, 15 years is the most you can get). And I decided that they are not worth that. I have lost too many years already, I did not want to throw 15 more years after them. So I just moved away, changed my identity.
Meanwhile I have left Germany, I live in the US now, I am married to a really wonderful man. We have a wonderful house, everything is great.
But I have flashbacks often, and if I weren't 4000 miles away, who knows, maybe one day I would get an axe and just hack them in slices...
I don't have that rage towards other people, it is not random. Only towards those who did that to me as a child.

I grew up in a Christian home. I was chastised when i did wrong, on more than a few occasions. It did me no harm (at the time it did i suppose, but i was never naughty again).
It taught me values, which sadly is lacking in society today.
I look back on it now, and think that half of the time, their could have been another solution.
My own children, i never beat, i took away their privileges, and believe me, that hurt more than a smack.

Children who are hit have a greater likelihood to end up in prison and have mental illness.
