You need to try and prime it first. Once you do this you can paint any color.

No but an oil based paint works better........personally I hate the thought of anyone painting bricks. Natural brick is beautiful, if its a bit dark there are all sorts of other things you do to make it appear lighter. You might also try a white wash or white stain. You can also use a concrete sealer for a wetlook, that is always beautiful too. Since it is so very permantent I would suggest getting a few bricks and experimenting to see what you like before you do the whole thing.

There are Heatproof paints at the hardware store. Inside the hearth this paint may even peel though.
