If you're talking about a new one, they are basically a 2 door version of the jetta with a shorter option list. Consumer Reports says that VW's of the past 98-04 have not been very dependable. Do lots of research before you buy.

Millions of Rabbits on the road... gas and diesel... they had a few
problems but for the most part were reliable and cheap to fix...
Have a mechanic look it over for you if you find one you want and make sure it is a decent car...

Yes. A rabbit is ridiculously unreliable compared to the Japanese cars manufactured in competition with it.
If you like having a towtruck follow you around when you're driving and love paying mechanics, get that rabbit!

New one , , , GREAT CAR.
Old one . . . any 25-30 year old car needs a parts car in the backyard! Brouhaha
Go with a new one. Its a good choice in today's market and looks better than a new Beetle for a guy to drive. (No flower vase)
Don't test drive it unless you are ready to buy. You will go home with it!

I had one a long time ago, and it ran great! My worst gripe about it, was that I always smelled the diesel fuel. It didn't matter if the windows were up or not. Otherwise it's a good little car.
