if you want only to add a symbol such as any of these (¾, ±, ≤, ≠, Φ, θ) or any other similar symbol, you can select [Insert] => [Symbol], then search for the appropriate symbol for you.
please note that you can then copy these symbols from the Microsoft word, to paste them into other applications.
if you want to add a more complicated symbol (such as a fraction, a square root, or even a derivation symbol) you have to go to [Insert] => [Object], select "Microsoft Equation XXX", then look there for a wide variety of symbols.
please note: I'm used to install Microsoft office in a Full mode (not standard), and I think that "Standard" mode doesn't include "Microsoft Equation" in the installation.
another note: some specific cases can be done with a simple keyboard shortcut, such as to write a power (Superscript), you can hit Ctrl+Shif+= then write whatever you want, then hit them back to write normally. other symbols might be inserted using the keyboard with the Alt key, such as " º " that can be inserted by holding down the Alt key while writing "0186" (without the quotation marks)
Enjoy ;)

Try Insert -> Symbol option in MS Word.
By the way, which version of MS Word are you using?
