Take a class in an enduro / cardio sport at your local YMCA. For instance, we've got a treadmill class that will really build endurance levels if it doesn't kill you first.

I'd also try "intervals." What you do is to run for 1/4 mile, then jog 1/4, then run 1/4, then... well, you get the idea. The same concept of "hitting it, then backing off" works for cycling, spinning, swimming, etc.

There are two ways you can run: long or fast. You cannot do both. You can get better at either one of them, but your performance must be geared towards one. That said the only way to go long is to go long. No shortcuts. No freebies. Go long. Go often. Take warm up and cool down seriously. Finally take low impact rest days, not days of inactivity rather days of relaxed fun activity that give your body a chance to repair itself. When you have been doing this long enough to feel comfortable at longer distances move into adding hills along your run. This will boost your staying power (apparent endurance) by getting you used to the discomfort as well as increasing your leg muscle mass a small but useful amount. It is important to take as seriously running downhill as up, as downhill builds your quadraceps muscles ability to absorb the elongation stresses unique to a downhill run. This will help keep your knees supported and your legs balanced. Listen to your body. It really does know best. Good luck!

add different cardio to mix it up...swimming is good because it is non-impacting..nice break from runing for your joints...it works all the muscles in your body and will help you build endurance quickly...
