St. John's Wart is known for helping depression but beware---it also decreases the effectiveness of hormonal birth control methods! Second, think seriously about seeking therapy and psychiatric meds/services as they are very, very useful ways to manage depression. And, yes exercise, nutrition and some herbs can have an impact on mood, no doubt. But, true clinical depression needs to be taken seriously and can not be resolved by exercise and nutrition alone. By saying so, it really discounts and disrespects the seriousness of the illness. For example, some people with diabetes can manage their diabetes with nutrition and exercise and others need medication. Different people respond better to different things and the important thing is to be healthy, so whatever will allow the person to be healthy is the most important thing.

Yes. It's called Saint John's Wart. However, There are free services at some universities, where you can be evaluated and they can determine if in fact you are suffering from depression. Also bear in mind, blood work should be done to ensure that your not suffering from a thyroid dysfunction, which can cause depression and will be treated differently to reverse your depression. Depression is so much more than popping a pill. Use the net and do your research. The more you know about any disease, the more informed you are and the easier it will be to fight back. Good luck.

My son used St. John's Wort, but the most important tools he had in fighting depression were healthy amounts of exercise, excellent nutrition (we even cut out all white flour and sugar), and 9 hours of sleep a night. The herbs were really just one small component of the whole thing.

St. Johns Wort, is supposed to be a good one for depression. I have read a lot about it and it seems to work well for some people and not at all for others. Your best bet would be to go to a Psychiatrist and have him evaluate yo because you could be Bipolar and not even know it. Good Luck

There is no remedy for depression. St. John's Wart may diminish the effects.

This isn't herbal... but it is holistic...

Exercise. It produces endorphies, and burns away stress. In fact, I can feel a floating anxiety that drives me nuts when I don't get my daily exercise. When I blow it out with a good workout, I'm good to go for another day or two. I also sleep much better.

The two that I am familiar with are Saint John's Wart and Kava Kava. Saint John's Ward didn't do anything for me. Kava Kava pulls me out of a depression with a quickness, but it comes at a cost, it's hazardous to the liver.

Yes there are many. Any health food store will sell you something, but also you could go to your local pharmacy and they'd have something "over the counter".
If you ever feel "suicidal" please get help immediately.
Call the National Hopeline Network at 1-800-784-2433 (TOLL FREE Nation Wide) Exercise can help you feel better almost immediately, as it helps to release "feel good" chemicals called endorphins into your bloodstream. Hope this helps. Good Luck!
