Windows Media Player doesn't play DVDs automatically, needs a decoder. You have several options, hopefully you have PowerDVD or some program like that that came with you drive, that is the best option. You can also get a plug-in for WMP, they cost $14.95. You can also try VideoLan as one person suggested, or mplayer which also works, here is the link:http://www3.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/win32/MPlayer-20060908-win32_gui.zip
The last two are free, but be patient as for some reason it takes them a minute to play the DVD, but they will.

Yes, you need a DVD decoder. My Windows Media Player plays DVDs and it was free - just go to the Microsoft website and download the latest version of Windows Media Player.

Yeah, i am thinking u are trying to use Windows Media Player to play yur dvds? WMP doesnt come with a dvd decoder, WMP needs it from a main program so u need to install a dvd player software eg Power DVD, Unlead DVD or Intervideo DVD. Yur friends shud have one of these programs so not to worry. If the dont, u can downlaod dem on a P2P Program like limewire or Ares but make sure when u downloading them, it comes with a serial, or crack or keygen. Be careful when downloading software from P2P. Viruses lurk there. Better chance with torrent files. www.torrentreactor,net and www.utorrent.com for the software to download yur files. Laterz.
