I am petsitting for my mother in law while she's on vacation and her canary died! None of the other birds are sick, so I didn't do anything wrong, so it probably died of "natural causes".
Do I email her and tell her right away, or do I wait until she's home, or should I wait email her the day before she comes home so she's not surprised? I'm not sure how attached she was to the bird, but it's her fiance's favorite pet.
I have to decide quickly!

This is hard, if she is really attached to the bird then it would spoil her holiday if you told her now, but would leave a bitter end to the holiday if she finds out when she gets home. Ask your husband what he thinks, he should know shouldnt he, its his mother. Just tell her that you are really sorry but one of her birds died while she was gone and it didnt suffer because it was really quick. Tell her you looked after them as best as you could so it must have just been little birdies time. Don't worry yourself over it, it wasnt your fault, and pet owners have to accept that and accident might occur while they are away. Just tell her you are sorry about it and Im sure she will be okay with it in time if she is upset in the beggining, good luck

I would write her an email explain that the bird was doing fine when you went to bed and the next morning he was at the bottom of the cage feet up. Then you can ask if she wants the bird in the freezer or if you should take care of the arrangements.

It gives her a chance to think about it. Her response will give you an indication of how close she is to the bird and how gently you should approach the topic when she gets back. It also sounds like you have her feelings in mind when you ask.

e-mail her don't wait i think it will make u seem like your hiding something if u normally don't email her wait till she calls then tell her or until she emails u. don't wait. some animals know when there owner is away and just get sick and die. did he get quiet was not as talkative do u even know how he acts with her that could have been a key factor or should i say signs that something was wrong good luck and i pray for courage and faith and strength to tell her the truth...

You poor thing!
Only you can make this decision because you know them. Do what your heart tells you to do!

If you tell now...they will be upset and there is nothing they can do.
If you wait until they get home you can tell them face to face there was nothing you or they could have done and you didn't want to mess up their trip.

Best wishes!

Tell her that way you dont get into a bad connection.
First replace it but you still tell her that it died.
Next try to do any thing you can to help her in any way shape or form.
It will get you off to a better shot.

If you dont tell her now then that will give her reason to be very upset with you. Better tell her now. Wasnt your fault. It just happens and its her bird so tell her now

I would wait. Why ruin her vacation? She can't do anything about it anyway. I've always heard the expression "Bad news can wait". I don't always agree with it, but in this case I do.

You have nothing to hide and should e-mail her right away. She would appreciate you doing so. It better tell her now and avoid the shock upon her arrival.

Buy a replacement canary. They're all the same.
