Atkins diet doesn't ask you to count calories, or to worry about fats in food. Instead, it tells you to look for carbohydrates, aka "carbs."
As it turns out, the body loves carbs, and will process carbs into energy very quickly. If it can't get carbs, then the body's second choice is to go for energy stored in your fat cells.
The diet has you do zero-carb foods for the first few weeks. Some examples of zero-carb foods are eggs and meats, which has lead some to joke about the "steak and eggs" diet.
As you can see, this is completely opposite of the conventional diet plans from the Government, etc. And, in the short term, it will raise your cholesterol.
The Atkins really does work for fairly fast weight loss. However, most people are unable to maintain their weight loss on the Atkins, and must find other ways to keep their weight off. This is where Weight Watchers and other plans seem to work much better.

I actually tried the atkins diet it is mostly a high protein low carb. diet it did not work for me because i am not big on meat,&eggs but on the other hand I have a friend whoms parents went on it and lost weight and was healthy. I had alot of flank {kidney} pain when I tried it . There is a few books out, I think there is no diet right for one person. good luck! I stopped dieting and just started eating healthy foods I like and it has worked for me and its been about 9 years of keeping my weight off!

the atkins diet is no more than 20 carbs a day which is way less than a 12 oz can of pop so good luck on trying that I tried it for a while but it is pretty hard to stick to it is good for rapid weight loss but if you mess up and don't stick to it you will gain it all back , you also need carbs they give you energy but eat the healthy ones and stuff that has few carbs ussually has alot of fat

I tried it and developed irritable bowel syndrome. It's better to eat a balanced diet. Atkins is not balanced. You cut out carbs, and eat much more fat and protein which is not healthy. This can cause high cholesterol and clog your arteries. You do lose weight but it will come back with a vengenance once you stop the diet. I know one person who had success with it, but I've heard more people say they've had problems afterwards.
I know I did and I can't recommend this diet to you.
If you want more info go to www.atkins.com that's their official sight.
