The Japanese Bobtails history is said to date back to ancient prints and manuscripts that date back at least 2.000 years. During the Edo Period a Bobtail was depicted in the Gotojuki temple in Tokyo. There is a legend of how this cat had lost its tail. The legend states that the cat was warming it self by the fire and got to close and set its tail on fire. It then proceeded to run through town setting the city on fire and everything burnt down. For punishment by the Emperor the cats were ordered to have their tails cut off. The actual reason the missing tail is in the genetics and still remains a mystery. however. when two Bobtails mate their offspring are also Bobtails. After World War II an American. Elizabeth Freret. lived in Japan brought the first three Japanese Bobtails to the United States. Later 38 more Bobtails were brought to the United States. The Japanese Bobtails were granted provisional status in 1971 and championship status in 1976.

The short tail is caused by the expression of a recessive gene. Thus, so long as both parents are bobtails, all kittens born to a litter will have bobtails as well. Unlike the Manx and other cat breeds, where genetic disorders are common to tailless or stumpy-tails, no such problem exists with the Japanese Bobtail.

The Manx cat is also born without a tail. Not just a short or bobbed tail.

No, Corgies, schperkies, previous English sheepdogs and Australian shepherds are all born without tails-additionally canines that have those breeds blended into them, yet each and every so often canines are not regarding any of those breeds could be born without tails too by way of a genetic illness.

I saw these cats on the vets in Hong Kong programme during the week. They had thought that the people were breaking the cats tails but then they found out that it was a genetic defect but they dont know what causes it.

It's a genetic mutation like the Manx cat. Nothing is wrong it is simply do to breeding and genetics to create a new breed.

the bob tail is a kind of mutation. I have a DSH who has a bob tail, that is, his tail is about 4 inches long and ends in a kind of "pom-pom" - its cute, but sometimes people ask me, "what happened to his tail?" I tell them, "he was born that way."

naturally bobtailed cats such as the manx ARE born that way - it is in their genes to be that way. IF we knew enough about genes we could all be rich lol
