There are many theories explaining the demise of the roman empire:-

1/ Bad leadership. The latter emperors cared less and less about building or expanding the empire and chose to live a life of excess thus neglecting the governance of the empire.

2/ The empire was just to large to be governed properly. Eventually, the oppressed people ruled under the empire and conquering tribes on the fringes of the empire, were too much for the Romans to hold off.

3/ The cultural ego behind the blind amibition that created the empire also caused its downfall.

It's interesting that after the fall of the Roman empire, the advance of western civilization receded and it would be many years later when we would have good roads, water systems and great architecture.
