Human nature is that it cannot live with the unknown. We need each other, and have developed ways to make sure that we can always function as a society. Looking at it from an objective POV, religion fulfills that inner need to solve for the unknown, and puts mankind in a place in relation to itself, the world, and the universe. We need to be able to know who and where we are.
Science is slowly taking over some of religion's previously held ground, but there will always be a part of science that can't satisfy mankind.

Well, I guess if one believes it possible that his ancestral relations were primates, then one would not need religion. If one believes the Holy Bible when it says we are made in the image of God, then it behooves us to be aware of that faith in God that has been handed down to us. I look at the Holy Bible as my own baby-book authored by my Abba-Father, Lord of Heaven and Earth, Creator of all things visible and invisible.
Two sources that are respected in academia are:
(1) a website called Reasons to Believe at www.reasons.org. headed by Dr. Hugh Ross.
(2) Josh McDowell's "Evidence that Demands a Verdict."

Religion fulfills the spiritual part of all humans.
Without our spirit and higher thinking we are just another mammal as any cow, cat, or piggy.
They don´t need a religion, we do.
Even atheist or agnostics need the existence of a religion to say they don´t need it.

Having the knowledge that you will die one day, brings up lots of fears. Religion gives comfort by leading people to believe that they have a reward in store for them when they die.
As far a society goes, the benefit is monetary.

Certainty (questionable) in the face of uncertainty. Validation. Answers where there are none. Absolution. Sanctuary. Many things, some real, some imagined. Not my path, though.

The universe is such an incredibly vast emptyness. Little dots here and there. Supposedly only our dot is full of life.
Life is such an incredibly scary thing.
We seek shelter.
Religion offers some kind of imaginary protection.

that all depends on what kind of person you are. for some people its the need for a high being that keeps everybody in check. some people need to believe in something larger than themselves so they dont feel totally powerless in some situations. and for other people yet it is the need to understand what they know nothing of, death and life for instance.

Religion certainly served a purpose once, but I see no reason why we need it today.
