what the different between canon 350d and 400d?

I added the D80 to your comparison, because I think it's worthy of consideration.

Which car is better? Chevy or Ford? Porsche or BMW? Mercedes or Lexus?

If you are "not a pro," perhaps you would do best by going with the recommendation of your local camera shop pro or a friend who has something that he/she likes. If you have someone who is willing to help you learn how to use a particular camera, add ten points to that brand in your decision making process.

I am a Nikon fan, but you will find just as many Canon fans. At this level, it is often more of an emotional decision than practical.

In addition to Dr. Sam's great answer, the specs don't tell the whole story. For example, the 400D has better AF than the 350D. And the Nikon D70s 'feels' better than a dRebel - although that's a personal call.

To be honest, you can fold the Canon and Nikon models into one continuous line-up, where you get what you pay for.
The D70s provides more control but less mega-pixels than the 350D. The 350D is also better at ISO 800 and above. I'd give the D70s the edge.
The 400D is clearly a better camera than either the 350D or the D70s.
And the Nikon D80 is clearly a better camera than the 400D. I'd gladly trade in the dust-reduction and other gadgets of the 400D just for the bigger viewfinder of the D80 !
Use that DPReview site for the in-depth reviews/ previews, too. That site has tons of information.
Just don't get carried away by all the features that $100 more will get you - and then the goodies that yet another $100 will get you... At the end of the day, they all take great pictures.
