Because the Company is a Multi-Level Marketing Company (MLM) and they need to have artificallay high prices to give bonuses to their distributors (4 to 5 levels up from the distributor) who sold it to the consumer. The business model was first made popular by Amway in the 1950's and some people think of it as a pyrimid because very few people at the top make money even though new recruit at the bottom are sold the "dream" of financial independence.

Typically, the MLM products are made as inexpensively as possible to pass along more profits to the distributors. Tahitian Noni juice is no exception, an article that ran in Forbes magazines estimated that $2 worth of Noni juice goes into each $42 bottle. Nice profit margins! The sad thing is distributors have to drink the "cool aid" and convince unsuspecting people that their product is original, authentic, and other irrelevant statement to get people to open their wallets and pay the high price for sugar water.

I think the cost is due to the fact that it is a private company. I had a woman stop by and try to sell me the product. To be honest, I wasn't super thrilled. It is a decent product, but I can't afford to spend that much. I think I'll stick with multi vitamins.
