Alcohol increases depression because it depletes the levels of serotonin in your brain. Serotonin is responsible for positive mood and feelings of joy. Alcohol depresses the central nervous system, hence the name depress.

Depression and alcohol are a bad mix. Alcohol will make the depression worse. Also when you drink alcohol, things may seem to be better, so you drink more alcohol. That could lead to alcoholism. Best off to see a doctor to determine if it is depression. Everyone gets sad or down every once in a while and if that is the case, try dressing up, looking your best, and see if that changes things alittle. The better you feel about yourself on the outside, gives the inside a little boost to

Technically Alcohol is a depressant drug, and as such will not necessarily improve your mood any. In fact the after effects of alcohol can make you feel worse.
If it does anything good it is that it provides a bit of dissasociation from your feelings but again its temporary. It may even depress you more.
If you are taking any type of antidepressants the cummulative effect is dangerous.

P.S. not that you asked, but...

A better choice to help is to not be alone.
Go out with friends, or even walk around the mall, or a park, or the gym. (Running and exercise cause you to release endorphins which improve your mood.) Drinking may seem like a way to run away from problems, but the truth is that the only way to really get a handle on it is by dealing with them. Alcohol doesn't have the capacity to fix your problems just make them worse or delay them.

God on the other hand, can. Say a prayer. It won't hurt.

Alcohol itself is a depressant. Even though alcohol makes you feel good for a little while, it won't take long before it takes a turn for the worse. That good feeling, will wear off quickly and you will be overcome by anger, and other destructive feeling and/or behavior. Depression is an awful thing to have to contend with; drinking doesn't help. Find a healthy way to relieve depression. Drinking is the worse thing you can do.

The main reason is because alcohol is a depressant which would only add to the depression you are already experiencing. Another reason is because if you are on medication for depression then 9 times out of 10 it should not be mixed with alcohol. And finally because it puts you at a higher risk of becoming alcohol dependent.

Like everyone else has said, alcohol is a depressant, which will only end up making matters worse for you. Instead of wasting money and/or your time, invest in a simplistic and yet effective antidote to your sadness, such as a huge-*** tub of Ben and Jerries. Sure it sounds typical, but it't th remedy of all remedies. For some people, excercise works too. I have found that there are only two ways to get past depression--- Either to set goals and become motivated (which oftentimes results in a higher self-esteem... Ex. Excercising works) Or dwelling on your problems until you see how conpletely irrational and dumb you are being ( This is where the Ice cream and dumb soap operas come into play.)

Whatever you do, work through depression to the best of your ability, and consult an official if you really need help.

Absolutely not. alcohol is a depressant and why would it help you become undepressed? Alcohol will make you think about all the bad stuff and things that are going on in your life and even cause you to make those things worse by doing or saying other things to cause yourself more problems. Look, if you need something go to the Dr. and take an antidepressant that's what they are for. If you just can't do that then start one day at a time doing one thing a day that will help someone else. Call someone that's shut in and talk to them. Go to the store for someone that can't go for themselves. Make a card for someone, anything at all to help someone else. Volunteer at the Good will store or anything to help. that takes your mind off yourself and your problems for a time. You may just meet some nice people and have a turn around in your life. good luck.

You shouldn't drink alcohol when you are depressed because alcohol is a depressant. It will make your symptoms worse while at the same time lowering your ability to think and act rationally.

Drinking alcohol will only make you feel worse. It is a depressant and will
also mess with your ability to make good decisions. Getting some
exercise will help with depression because it releases feel good chemicals
to your brain. Go for a walk, you'll feel better.

I've dealt with depression by drinking. Going out and having a few can really pick one up (drinking at home alone really does just make it worse.) But, if the depression continues and the only way you know to deal with it is drinking, you are headed for big trouble. It really is best to find other ways to handle it.
