I'm an American. I spent 5 weeks in northern China last summer and didn't know the language or about the culture. But it went very very well. Communication can be a challenge but will be much easier in Shanghai than where I was.
I advise you to be good natured, have a sense of humor and kindness and people *know* it and will respond in kind.

research on the web (wikipedia), find message boards where you can ask people questions (myspace groups has a lot of good boards, look up shanghai & you will meet a lot of foreigners living in shanghai)...take a class to learn some chinese phrases. if you're going to be there for a long time, then look into getting into a program while you're there to learn about the culture. www.worldlink.com & www.educasian.com offer a service that connects you directly to schools and programs in china. both are costly, but are well worth it if you know nothing about china and plan on staying for awhile.

Go to library search for books on chinese culture, chinese custom food and religion. You can mix around with chinese people, learn and speak their language it is not difficult to speak but to learn chinese characters and strokes oh its very difficult as chinese have 3600 characters that u must able to recognise and pronounce correctly as each strokes carries a different meaning and word...unlike the english where u must know the 26 alphabets....
