Why do many men spit into the urinal before using it? I have witnessed this several times. A guy walks up to the urinal, spits in it, and then takes a piss. I don't get it.

I think guys do it for a couple of reason:
1. To make a mental note of the aiming point, thus they will be better able to control their trajectory.
2. To check on wind direction and ascertain if there is a rare chance of strong wind. Its certainly much preferred to have spit on your face rather than a strong stream of urine.

Hmmmmm, I didn't know this! Having this incredible insight into the male psyche, I'll pretend I'm a man for a second:
Ha! A urinal and I have to piss! Ha! I'll show you! (Spit). Ok, now I know I can spit INTO it, that means I can actually piss INTO the urinal instead of all around it.
P.S. My boyfriend just confirmed my suspicions! He says it's a matter of ALIGNMENT.

Its a sign of intimidation. It works like this: spitting is a very mild form of showing aggression and confidence. To be outwardly aggressive and attract attention you must be confident about your ability to fend off others. By contrast, those who keep themselves away fro attention, are timid.
If someone spits in the toilet they are subconsciously doing it to show some low level agression, so that anyone who might be there will see it and think the spitter is not intimidated by anyone.
In reality, its a way of deflecting the truth, as people who act like that are actually timid and scared, and just putting on a front.
Next time you see it, have a look at the spitter. I bet they are acting in an overt manner which says "look at me, im dead confident, nothing scares me, im not intimidated"

Being a woman, this concept is foreign to me, but I asked my Husband and he said that he's also noticed this in the Mens Room at work and out at restaurants and for the life of him, he can't figure out why some men do this.
It sounds like a strange thing to do.

I think it's kind of a strange habit to stand around watching guys pee in the urinals. I'd be concerned with myself if I were you.

verifying drainage. Want to be sure it works. Besides it's better than spitting on the floor.

I've wondered that too....and I do it.
It's not a consious thing...you just do it. And you only do it in a public restroom. I guess it is some kind of "marking territory" thing. Weird...primal.
