There was one study in the mid to late studies which said that chromium picolinate aids in fat loss. They gave it to a football team and after one study, showed that it increased muscle mass and reduced the player's body fat levels.

Since then, there have been several studies with chromium and none have been able to prove that chromium promotes weight loss / fat loss.

I wouldn't supplement with it. Not only are the fat loss claims dubious, I read in one Men's Health magazine a number of years ago that too much chromium can be toxic.

NaturalStandard (a database that's pretty objective i get through school) gave it a "C" on an A-F scale because studies on it have varied widely in determining whether/how effective it is or isnt and/or there isnt enough evidence to make a definitive judgement. some possible reported side effects were breathing problems, immunosuppression, headaches/mood changes, liver/kideny problems, rash

(you'll see most of those side effects listed with almost every drug though and can occur with just about anything, didnt list how often they occured)

generally if results vary widely, something either doesnt work or has pretty relatively minor benefits

do your grocery shopping with a list and a time limit that way you re less likely to stray into the processed foods section

I don't think that alone would be good enough for any kind of reasonable weight loss.
