Bi-polar is basically the same thing as manic-depressive, and it can also be the same as schizophrenic as with any illness there are various degrees of the symptoms. Just like two people with the flu will have different ailments. Bi-polar is quite popular right now and many people who are depressed, or just want an excuse to act out now claim they are bi-polar, which is a much more serious condition.

"Bipolar Disorder" is simply a newer term for "Manic-Depressive Illness". Schizophrenia is a different illness although the two disorders can share similar symptoms. Schizoaffective Disorder is an illness that has significant symptoms of both Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia. It's a bit confusing, even to psychiatrists. Typical "Schizophrenic" symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations and catatonic behavior are also seen in severe mania and psychotic depression.

Bipolar disorder and Manic Depression are the same illness. Manic depression is the old term used years ago. They changed it because their are multiple types and forms of bipolar illness that don't include mania or depression alone.

Schizophrenia is a completely different disorder that involves delusions, hallucinations, hearing voices, being paranoid that everyone is out to get you, some times becoming comatose, and other psychotic behaviors.

Bipolar illness can sometimes mimic schizophrenia during a manic episode. Severe mania can include hallucinations, psychosis, paranoia, violent behavior and other behaviors also seen in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia, though not better or worse than bipolar, is a different disorder.

People with bipolar, however, can experience psychotic symptoms which are very similar to some of the symptomology of schizophrenia.
