The person that didn't argue, and thanked me for challenging their faith, as that is what Jesus said they should do. I thought it was rather compelling.

If I was an atheist, I might go with the Kalam cosmological argument:

Premise 1. Everything that begins to exist has a cause for its existence;
Premise 2. The universe began to exist.
Conclusion: The universe has a cause.

The reason I give the cosmological argument is that it directly addresses your "theism" question, which does not relate to any single religion or even a currently involved God (the clockmaker analogy, makes it, winds it up, walks away).

But as a Christian, I would argue that the strongest argument for Christianity's truthfulness--as opposed to mere theism--should consist of the lives it produces. Jesus said, "All people will know that you are my disciples if you love one another" (John 13:35). Sadly, the strongest argument against Christianity is often the failure of so many who profess his word to be living testaments to the power of his love.

Many scientists back in the day were deists, and they often commented, after making interesting discoveries, that it was amazing how God could create such a broad universe that held to such simple laws. Doesn't really convince me to believe in God, but it's nice to see that some people know that belief in God doesn't mean you have to close your eyes to science. In fact, it might even encourage you to pursue it, to see that if there was a God, he really knew what he was doing.

Is there such a thing as an intelligent argument for theism??

Never heard one...

The closest thing I've ever heard for an intelligent argument is Pascal's wager... and that is pretty sad...

I'm not saying Pascal's wager is intelligent, far from it... It's stupid, but it's the closest thing I've ever heard...

I am still waiting for that one. No matter how many truths you show them, they still go back to the bible and try to find a way to argue their way out of it with scripture.

There is a website (many actually) that point out the many many many contradictions in the bible, from one verse to the other, and they also give the religious types a way to reply.

Almost every single inconsistancy has a reply trying to explain why it is so, and usually failing miserably.

For example, creationism... which came first, man or animals? Two different account on this one... god made animals and then made man, and god made man, saw he needed the animals and made them and brought them to adam to name.

Ok, sorry... that makes no sense. The religious reply is that it is meant to say that he he created animals first and then after having created man, brought them to adam... but that is not what it says.

They reach so farm into the realms of impossibility and then try to make what they're saying seem possible. It's sad. They will defend themselves to the end, and not bother to consider, gee, what if I am wrong?

Nope.

No good arguements from their side of it.

**EDIT** By the way, I am writing a book on atheism, and I am doing a survey currently to get both sides opinions on many different things. I welcome and NEED responses from both sides of the debate... http://www.tntservice.net/atheism/

Thanks!

OK, not an Atheist, sorry. But think about it, this is a moot argument. We can't really prove anything until we die. If they Atheists are right, well, they can never rub it in but if the Believers are right we'll just say I TOLD YA SO!

That we can scientifically create a living human with God's earth but not from scratch.
