For this price category, you might consider a
complete home theater package (i.e. "HTIB").
A couple brands that I can suggest putting on
your short list would be JVC and Yamaha.

You might also consider Pioneer as well.
Some of these HTIB systems will require that
you get a DVD player -don't worry, the prices
of quite a few will still be within your range.

Other than that, you would have to step up to
the $500-$750 range which would get you a
much better subwoofer to complement even
better speakers in the home theater system.

I bought an Onkyo 790 system. Got a rebate & paid $400 for a 7 speaker system. It is incredible for that price. It was just rated by Consumer reports in the new issue as a best buy. It was the only one at that price with a powered subwoofer. (You actually plug into the wall, not just a speaker wires hooked up)

Bose is, I believe, discontinuing the Series 5 ( i think). I heard they are now going for about $350. I've had mine for several years. I have never had it loud enough. The sound is as good today as it was the day I bought it. It is fantastic! You can't go wrong with a Bose.

My family got me an LG home theater system with a 1000 watt amp that was 299.00. This thing kicks butt!

For $350 I would go with http://www.crutchfield.com/S-g43s67jqmL2/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?search=sony+surround+sound&i=158DAVX375

I'm pretty familiar with sony surround systems, a few people in my family have them, and they do really good!

Lot's of bass if your settings are set correctly!
