I also got the same feeling like you, because coming next month, I'm gonna meet someone who will come to visit me all the way from another half of the earth..(hehehehe! he's not something), but for me, I haven't meet a guy that I will meet for looooon time, and I am shy to nervous that I don't know how to express myself and something.... only the way is, just try to relax, and take a deep breath, and try to enjoy the conversation, just be happy!

You have to make yourself get more involved, chat, etc. As a shy person myself, I know how tough it can be...and our silence can cause the other person to think we are either snobs, boring, or not interested (when none of those things may be true!)
Think up some good, general conversation starters and have them at your ready when you meet someone new...asking questions of someone allows them to do more of the talking (unless you get back one-word answers) and often begs more questions...so you can learn about them, and disguise your shyness at the same time by drawing them out and getting them to do most of the talking...

A lot of people are shy when they first meet people. Just pretend you're not, they don't have to know how you feel on the inside!

im shy too so i can relate ...well you dont know who this person is...will they accept you or reject you?...so its normal to be shy..im shy at first until i get to know you...my best friends know me to be a talker...they can't shut me up...but at first im more reserved which is normal you want to take in the scenery and feel people out first ..but if you want to be more extroverted you might want to talk about things you are experienced in....and you will come off as smart ...ask them about something you know ? like say what kinds of food do you like ?...use an icebreaker and then you will get people talking in your area of expertise ....good luck and if you are still shy...hey its not the end of the world ....you are you and it makes you ...you ....LOL

A lot of peoplecan be shy. Like me for instance :). I try to think that i've known the person for a long time and that we are good friends. That way you won't be nevous talking with the person.

Learn to smile and look the person in the eye. Introduce yourself with a offered handshake. Be yourself, and don't try to hide behind the shyness... Remember, you don't have to try for small talk, but by being friendly you have made a great impression....

My dad has a friend who is remarkable, he sells inventions to big companies. He is willing to talk to anyone, and pushes me to do the same. His reasoning is this, "They are only people, they are no better and no worse than you are, If they feel as though they are better than you and shouldnt associate with you, then they are not worth your time." He is constantly holding indepth conversations with people he doesnt even know all the time as if he has known them forever. And since I took on the "THEY ARE ONLY PEOPLE" attitude, I have made many new friends. Try it, it works.

Get over it. Being shy will get you nothing. Grit your teeth (figuratively) and do what you have to do. It is better to be turned down than to always wonder what might have been. I wasted many opportunities before I learned this lesson.
