My cat likes to sit quietly on the roof of my house and catch bats and then she brings them inside my room to show off. She then carries the dead bats into my bathroom and eats them. Should I be concerned? The bats she is catching are healthy, flying bats. The bats have no obvious signs of disease and I've talked to animal control and they say there isn't a big rabies problem in my area.

The bat species happens to be Eptesicus fuscus more commonly known as the big brown bat. They are also not roosting in my home but there is a street light right out side my house and the bugs are abundant after dark.

Your cat is being a feline! Mine today scared the pants off me while laying quietly in the back yard a bird flew by and that was the end for the bird! If your cat also has it's rabies shot I wouldn't worry about it. He's not caught a bat yet (I say yet because it's only a question of time we have bats too and he enjoys the roof also) but I have had the pleasure of mice, rats, lizard, birds and bugs and not always dead either. Imagine how much fun it is to chase a mouse around at 3 am! Yeah give your cat a hug for me for having mastered the kill part and not only the play part of hunting! I hope if he does catch a bat he will have the sense of killing it first before showing it off to me! I've already chased my quota of birds also indoors!

First of all....BATS ARE NOT RODENTS, they are mammals, closely related to primates!! You should be concerned as your cat is contributing to the decimation of bat species. Bat populations are declining worldwide. Bats are protected and I am sure you have no clue as to what species your cat is eating, some could be endangered species. Bats can carry rabies, but it is not as common in bats as most people think, but rabies does not show signs in bats like in other animals, they could be rabies carrier and show NO signs of being ill, so your cat NEEDS a rabies shot. Please try and make changes in your home so bats are not roosting in your roof or keep your cat indoors.

This is not a healthy situation for you or your cat. I would not let the cat eat bats. Bats carry rabies and other diseases.

Well, then it seems like it should be OK. Where I live bats are the primary vector for rabies so I would be concerned if they tangled with one.

Bats are pretty much like mice with wings, so there's no problem. Any wild animal can have rabies, etc, so just make sure your cat's vaccines are up to date.

Your cat is just catching what it can in it's envyronment. It's healthy for it to be a predator but it makes a mess and cat food is probably better for it's diet. You should considder keeping your cat indoors if it gets on your nerves but unless your cat brains itself trying to catch a bat it's not dangerous.

No such thing as a "healthy" bat ! And yes, I would be concerned ! They can carry all kinds of diseases. Find your cat another hobby.

That is not healthy at all....any type of rodent can make a kitty sick. You never know if the rodent has parasites or diseases....some of them can give your kitty anemia.
