What I'm talking about without a specific chapter and verse? Shouldn't you go back and read it again, or is that just a cop-out?

I'm not asking for them to sight chapter and verse, just to understand the context.

Because they have not read it most of the time. They only know what they do know from church.

Even when they do read it, most of the time-they have used their church to tell them what it means.

Well, there are a lot of verses in the Bible, lol. Just because a person has read something doesn't mean they're going to know where a specific thing was said in the book.
For example, I've read George Orwell's 1984 at least 15 times. And yet, even though I can tell you basically the entire plot, if you were to name a specific event, I'd have to go back to the book to find it. I'm not going to automatically know which page it's on.
It's the same with the Bible, except it's got about 1100 more pages than 1984 does. So when people name these obscure passages, it should be no surprise that Christians (or anyone else for that matter) would need a general idea on where it's found.

If you have studied the bible in earnest, you don't need a chapter and verse to have a conversation about something that's there.

C'mon. Does a history teacher CARE that you remember what PAGE and LINE in your history book contains information about the Emancipation Proclamation? NO. He cares that you learned what it was, why it was, when it was, and who the key players were.

If they didn't know what you were talking about without the chapter & verse, then believe me reciting the chapter and verse won't help them, except that they can go look it up later. And like I said, if they actually knew the bible, they'd remember generally where it was, given a reasonably good description of what you remember reading.

Bottom line, most folks are too lazy to read and study. I just raved about this and the U.S. Constitution on another question. Our constitution is only about a 20 minute read for most people, yet a tiny percentage of Americans actually read it. Imagine how much worse it is for Christians and the bible!

Some Christians have read and understand the Bible ,they can quote verse and chapter verbatim ...some have that gift ..others have a photographic memory and some rather not quote the Bible because they may be unsure of what they are saying and do not want to confuse you also they may want you to read it for yourself.

If you are implying that someone should know the exact chapter and verse of any specific context of the Bible, I would scarcely believe anyone could know such besides someone with autism.

I'm assuming you're an American. If I asked you about a certain portion of the constitution, and you didn't know the answer, would you still be an American? Same with Christians. We might not have the Bible memorized, but we know the main points and it's our love of God that makes us who we are.

If you are having problems discussing bible passages with your fellow brothers;may I make a suggestion,PLEASE go to a different church!
You need to be around believers that will help you to understand God's word.
Of course,God's Spirit is your teacher.
So,you should be praying to God to help you understand his word. You can also go to some christian chat rooms to discuss his word.Sorry I don't have any off hand.
God Bless

I object when people take biblical verses out of context. This demonstrates to me that they don't really care what God says in His Word, and simply want to use individual passages to prove their point.

But...I don't know what you are talking about...I'm not a mind reader.

With the internet you can find pretty much what you are looking for so learn the ropes and start digging. Nobody wants to be unfair. I can't remember a lot of things or exactly where things are myself so I try taking my own advise.

"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" Romans 3:23

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23

"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Romans 10:9-10
