You missed one thing in your question, as you said, to "help" the poor, not eliminate the poor. If you give a man a fish, he eats for the day, but if you teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime. When I see the line up for the hand-outs, they wrap around the block, but when I look into the Bible studies, it is the same faithful few. How can the Church help people who want to live their lives on their own terms, which in fact are not working for them?
BTW- A million dollar ediface is not more important, but if you are in a congregation, and that is what you want to Worship God in, and you legally obtain the money, the problem is what, again?

I agree with you that there is abuse of much of the money that is collected, enough so that many people wonder what good religion is doing anybody other than to fatten the wallets of the preachers. If I were Satan, that is exactly what I would want the so-called preachers of the good news to be doing, and unfortunately, many preachers and religious leaders take the bait as the pharisees and other religious leaders did in the time of Jesus. However, these robbers of God will get their reward when in the judgment Jesus says, depart from me ye who practice lawlessness. I never knew you. It seems Jesus said, the poor you will have with you always because he knew the depravity of man's heart even amongst those who are supposed to be the shepards of the flock.
However, amidst these scoundrels are honest, Christian leaders and churches who do wonderful works for the poor and needy, and who are self sacrificing in their sincerity of service. These are the ones who are exemplifying true Christian virtue.

That's a good question. If a preacher gets good enough to preach on television he becomes a millionaire. Olsten collected 75 million and to date has a several million dollar house a jet and fleet of cars, etc, etc. These are tax free dollars. All the electric preachers such as Jerry Falwell are more than millionaires.
They say well we build colleges, schools, that have prayer.
Big deal they are not free, people pay to go there so what they did was reinvest their money. They pay more than at other places. Their hospitals are not free. But they say we build a hospital with the contributions. None to date give to the poor.
They are all fabulously wealthy and support the president in all his wars.

There will always be poor people. Yes, some churches focus too much on building... but at the same time, it is sometimes necessary to have large buildings if the church is growing quickly - the building then helps their ministry.

Giving money and food to people with no strings attached is effectively paying them to be lazy. It only exacerbates the problem.
If you want to help the poor, you shouldn't give out free money. You should use it to give them jobs.
And don't claim that there are no jobs that could be done. Farming and construction projects are always an option. If people in a village are starving and dying of dysentery, food and money might help. But food and money that pays people to raise crops and dig a sewage system will help even more.

Go to the Vatican and look at their holdings... The art, the literature etc... is worth millions alone, and yet they keep it lock up where no one can see, much less benefit. For some it is about the money. But I also believe that on a smaller scale their are some home town churches that truly try to help their congregations.

Nobody's gonna help the poor. Least of all a church. Then they'd have to turn lose of some of the tax-free fortune they've collected. That's about the biggest lie churches tell us!

The church collects money for the church first. If they have additional funds, it goes to charitable places.
A tithe is for the church. Anything additional you donate is for charity.
