The witch trial swere inspired by the lack of understanding that Christians had for the world and how things worked. China never had that kind of ignorance and, unlike the Christian world, China has a long history of metaphysical and magical practices associated wtih the religions practecied there over the last few millinea.

There were certain weather patterns in those years, that created a very certain type of fungus that plagued there yeast crops. It had almost an opiate type quality to it. Because it only effected part of the crops only a hand full of loaves of bread would have this yeast in it at a time. Unknowingly ingesting this fungus (I believe it was even a cousin to opium, though I'm not sure now) would lead to hallucinations, and some one had to be blamed for this "wickedness" that came over them during this time. It was usually the most unpopular to begin with, or someones mistress and the wife would accuse... so on and so forth. It was a major bout of drama that went way to far. And it carries on to today if you stop and think about it.

No, China has only had Mao who killed over 26.5 million people in various re-education programs or through famine and mismanagement of agriculture, plus various other dictators and despots who killed people.
The communists changed the writing of chinese so that the people could not read the old writings.
The Japanese were no different when they controlled most of China, they probably killed 10 million, including 250,000 who assisted or were thought to have assisted the pilots from the Doolittle raid on Tokyo

China was full of people. They had their own atrocities.
(In the Old West, how many innocent US and Cdn cowboys were hung for rustling by mis-guided people taking the law into their own hands?)
If a country has people in it, it will experience people problems.

Cause Chinese ppl are just cool...
In reality, the Chinese people never had a problem with magical phenomena and other stuff. They never believed that people were witches, rather some demonic force was stalking them, and they just used charms and stuff to get rid of them.

American's aren't nearly as advanced and free as we would like to believe we are. We have a lot to be ashamed of from our country's younger days.
