I spent about $115 on her mattress (from a local mattress factory) plus I bought a $10 foam mattress pad and two mattress protectors for accidents.
Have you tried adding a pad to his mattress?

my child has a bed with a trundle, the first matress I bought I paid $100 for she was only 1yr. so she was very light, but I laid on it and it was the worst thing in the world. Because of the bed it is with the trundle she did not need a box spring, which really helps reinforce the matress, so I bought her a more supportive matress $300 for a twin, I would never short my selef sleeping on a crappy matress, so I should not do it to her. PS. I was a single mother working 60hrs a week to pay the bills, I did the 90day same as cash, so each month I only had to save $100 dollars, $25 a week to get her a good durable, comfortable matress, and put the cheap one on the trundle for friends to sleep on.

For my first child we brought a cheap mattress.I too laid on it one night and could feel the ridges the next morning went a brought a $200.00 one its better.
However just yesterday we had a guy from Sealy come and inspect our $3000.00 mattress which has sagged after 2 yrs he looked at the boys beds which were also brought at the same place Captain Snooze and he said even though they were mid range kids mattresses that he could feel the ridges. The kids beds are on slats yet the Sealy guy recommends mattress and base of good quality. So I suggest you get your child a decent bed even if you have to pay it off. Remember kids do most of there growing while their sleeping. As for my kids I guess they will need new mattresses soon and they are only 5 and 3.

If funds will allow go with a "middle of the road" priced mattress. The less expensive ones feel like - well, you know what. If you can save the money & wait a little longer to get the better mattress it will pay off in the long run. My husband & I asked grandparents to gift our son with money for his 2nd bday so we could get him his "big boy" bed for his 2nd bday. We were able to get a decent Serta which my daughter now uses & is a very comfy mattress all these years later.
PS If you have a Sam's Club or wholesale retailer near you go check out their mattresses. Sometimes you can get a good one for a lot less money.

My aunt bought my daughter a bunkbed... We only have one child, but she realllllly wanted one.
The matresses that came with it aren't really matresses at all, but a sheet of this foamy black stuff all mashed together and thrown into a zipped up matress shaped thing.
I lied on it and was instantly uncomfortable, but my daughter sleeps on it and never says anything about it being uncomfortable, so I would have to agree that weight makes a world of difference.

I recently upgraded my sons matress as he is heavier now then when we first bought the other. He was complaining of feeling the slats through it, We bought him a good innnerspring from a garage sale, keep an eye out for good clean ones. You dont need to spend a lot of money to get a good one.

while it is true that the child is light, eventually, he/she won't be. Then you'll find yourself having to spend once again on a mattress for the same child. Bite the bullet and go get a decent one at a reputable store. Most chains have payment plans which helps out a lot.

My young infants sleep on our heated floor. you may get an electric powered blanket for about $30 dollars and do the comparable element. We discovered approximately it in Korea, the place maximum people sleep on heated flooring as a exchange of matresses. wish this facilitates.

My daughter just turned 3, and hadn't really slept through the night...ever. She is a thrasher, and gets tangled in the blankets or falls off the bed.
We splurged, spent $300 on a good (softer) mattress - and the first night she slept all the way through. Every night now, she'll voluntarily go to bed, snuggle into her blankets and say over and over "I love my new bed, I love my new bed"
It was the best $300 we ever spent!
