I have sang for YEARS, and have been told (through people, awards, recordings, etc.) that I'm pretty good. What I do is:

1. ALWAYS breathe into your stomach when you sing. If your shoulders go up you're doing it wrong.

2. ALWAYS sing from your "stomach" (diaphragm). If you feel your throat tightening as you sing, it's likely that the power of your voice is coming from your vocal chords rather than where it should be coming from...your stomach.

3. ALWAYS remember that singing isn't just about the performance...it's about in between also. Try to train yourself to breathe into your stomach in conversation as well. Also (and this may seem weird) watch what you eat. Foods that cause you to have acid reflux or indigestion could permanently damage or temporarily impair your vocal chords.

sing from your diaphram and sing like you are talking to someone.
