buddhism is a religion. just because it isn't strictly defined like the other religions doesn't mean that it is not a religion. there are two branches the theravada and the mahayana. mahayan believe that buddha is a "god", while the theravada branch believe that buddha was a teacher.

Buddha was of no religion. He was supposedly born to a virgin mother and preached of man's enlightenment through himself. There are 10 commandments of Buddhaisim to help one reach enlightenment, almost similar to the 10 commandements of Christianity. Buddha was quick to correct men who wanted to call him "God" and worship him. He was a teacher with profound wisdom and enlightenment, but he was no God, and he wanted no one to establish a faith over him.

If pressed, I would say that Gautama Siddhartha was the first Buddhist. However, the Buddha wasn't religious; he was intensely spiritual.
