I'm white, daddy is black and we have 2 beautiful boys. My 3 year old boy has "good hair" but it's so curly and mine is baby fine and straight so I have no experience with curls. His hair is not really course but is very curly. I put his pic on my avatar if that helps at all.
Questions are:
- how often should I wash it?
- currently have it hand cut with scissors, should I?
- I currently use a little leave in conditioner/detangler and comb with fairly fine toothed comb. is there something else I should do?

The 3 year olds hair looks great most of the time I just want to know if it needs something else. and btw my other son is 7 months old, not having problems with his mostly bald head.

It sounds like you are doing everything perfectly!
If you want to seperate the curl a little more, buy some spray in gel. Redken makes a good one. Spray the gel into your hand and run your fingers through his hair after you put in his detangler.

This child has obviously seen some horrible things in her short little life, sounds to me like she's seen males being violent. Kudos to you for taking her in and trying to give her a stable home. I would advise some sort of therapy if she isn't already doing so. Martial arts is also very good for kids with anger issues. As for the hair problem, I have a biracial daughter with curly hair as well and she also hates having it combed out. You know as well as I do if it isn't combed often it ends up a knotted mess in no time. The best solution I've found is to comb it in the bath with lots and lots of conditioner before you rinse it out, you don't have to wash it every time, just use the conditioner. You can keep her occupied with bath toys while you do this. Make sure you have a wide toothed comb. Then right after you rinse, pull her hair back into a loose braid. Tell her it's so she can wear her hair down the next day just like a boy and you won't have to comb it out again. It might work, best of luck! Edit: Almost forgot. Try letting her watch you get yourself ready each day, if she sees all the cool stuff girls get to do it might spark her interest.

Well personally. I have a bi racial cousin whos mother is white and father is black (my uncle). They had a really tough time dealing with her hair. Which is extremely curly. To the poiint where it would get tangled and matted becasue my aunt didnt knwo what to do with it.
But i think if youre really having issues with his hair go to the black side of the family. They would know how to better deal with it. I dont think you should cut it. BUT if its annoying to keep brusing your son's hair. You can always get his hair cornrowed. (braids). They last a while.

Combing wise. If his hair gets tangled or knotted you should get a wide tooth comb. It wont pull out his hair as bad a fine tooth comb might.

Have your baby's daddy take him to a black barbershop and get a nice fade. Don't use a fine tooth comb on curly hair.

aww they sound so cute...
you should consider letting it grow and then you can take him to get it professionally braided or cornrowed. but as far as washing it, u can wash it how ever often you want i dont think that matters... but either let it grow, or chop it all off either way it should be easier to tame.
