If a police officer is made aware of an ANIMAL ABUSE/NEGLECT crime- How long can the cops wait to arrest the perpatrators? Can they do this at any time? Or does it have to be within a certain length of time??? days? months? years?

I believe the statute of limitations is 7 years that's on most crimes in NY State! At one time it was murder was the only crime that didn't have a statute of limitations but they extended that to rape and sex crimes! A sex crime can be forcibly raping a young girl to peeing in a parking lot! But it gets hard to prosecute somebody after a while! I'm sure I peed in many parking lots but unless they have someone who witnessed and is willing to testify, or a urine sample - have no idea how long they can be used, I don't think I'll get arrested! At least I freaking hope not! Ha-ha-ha Just because you tell a cop that Joe Blow is abusing his animals doesn't mean they have to go arrest him either! Especially if you're "not all there" or have complained about the same erson before!

Animal abuse has to have physical proof be that a video, photo, or actual animal. If these don't exist no arrest can be made. If you are depending solely on the animal as evidence, once the animal heals there's little law enforcement can do. Unless you have broken the bones severely or left huge scars, there's not much that will show up on an exam of the animal.

but if this is in relation to your other question then there maybe an ongoing investigation still happening and until that is complete NO arrests would be made nor would she be let off either.........

The thing is ther must have been some basis of truth in the allegations as the animals where removed ??? or am I wrong on that point...........

To be honest it sounds like a neighbor got totally fed up with your 'friend' taking in ALL these strays and feeding them in and around the house and reported her...............personally can totally sympathies with the neighbors...what one person thinks is cute and helping out is a NIGHTMARE for the ones living close by.....the stench of so many cats and damage to surrounding gardens would be pretty grim when you think of the amount of animals she had.

If I'm not mistaken this is not a police officers decision. He can only report your claim. If there is enough evidence to support your claim , the perpetrator can then be arrested. Animal abuse crimes are notorious for being hard to process.

you are refering to a statute of limitations and it depends on the city state and county laws.

There also has to be and investigation just like if a person is abused...
