I bought a whole fresh coconut as an impulse by today, and now i'm not sure how i should prepare it. Anyone have any recipes that call for one, or any good techniques for preparing one?

You should cut it in half, empty it out and do the thing on Monty Python where they make it sound like horses hooves ;)

How to open a coconut
http://www.howtoopenacoconut.com/

Unopened coconuts store well in the refrigerator for several weeks. Firm coconut meat will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 10 days, or may be frozen for 8 to 12 months. Freshly grated coconut will keep for 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator. Soft coconut meat and milk should be refrigerated and used within a day.

Really the best thing to do is open it by hitting it with a hammer. You can peel out the insides of it with a knife and eat it just like that if you wish. Coconuts aren't normally a staple in anyone's diet as far as I know - it is used as flavoring instead in many dishes, like indian curries.

I see them on the food market now and then - touch your grocer interior the section, and in the event that they do no longer carry them, they are able to organize them wholesale for you. (retail i've got seen them at $3 a bite)
