I want a dog that is:
-very small, under 10 pounds, preferably under 8.
-cute.
-bonds closely with one person.
-is generally a healthy breed.
-purebred, though i do like some of the "designer dogs" like poodle mixes.

any suggestions for what kind of dog I should get?

The smaller the dog, harder it is to potty train it. You gotta be ready and serious about that one. A lot of little dogs will get "pee" excited too, that means say, when you walk in the room they get so excited they pee a little.
As for what breed, pugs-they are cute, but can weigh more than what you seem to want, and when they hit a certain age they tend to get respiratory issues, and heavier breathing, almost a loud raspy sound due to the lack of sinus area.
I wanted a little dog, and ended up with an Italian Greyhound. She weighs 14 pounds, still small but long legged. She has all the energy in the world, but when I want to just sit around she will calm down and couch potato with me. She even sleeps in later in the morning than I do sometimes. She's also very loyal to me. Tho she isn't fond of other dogs or children much, she does like my parents dogs, and she likes cats. She grew up with one, so maybe she thinks she is one? I dunno.
Think about it.

Go for the Maltese they are a small beautiful breed and is generally a one person dog.
they stay under ten pounds.and you can carry them around in all the neat designer doggy bags they are making now.
They only thing you have to really worry about with this breed is to make sure that the eyes are cleaned keep the hair clipped close by the eyes,
you can really make them look pretty in all sorts of ribbons and bows.
and the clothes if you live in a cold climate.. my gosh the clothes that they make for a pup that size..
good luck and have fun!

How old are you??? This isn't a purse you hold for a while... then the fashion changes you leave it in your closet...This is a commitment that will give you joy and companionship for years and years....If your looking for a dog that looks cool to impress your friends for a while....Please think twice...Buy a coat or a watch to show off...don't think cuz you get a dog like Paris Hilton that you look cool...There is more people that will never respect you for a long long time...They won't forget either.. if you get a dog.. make sure your going to take care it for years and years...If you want a dog now... listen to some of the people that have answered your question..and talk to your Mom.. she Knows!!

Try your local pound and start there. Rather than support these breeders or puppy mills, give a deserving animal a good home. Pedigrees come with health issues sometimes due to all the inbreeding. Or you could figure out what kind of dog is right for you and go to that breed's specific "rescue" site and put your name in.

I would say a Dauschaund they are funny sweet protective animals. They also have the bark of a much larger dog good for detering intruders. Mine was fearless yet sweet as could be kids could roll all over him dress him up & he would just sit there licking them. Scooter was a good dog. Deffinantly a wiener dog.

I have a min-pin and she is my bestest friend she loves me and only me. She weighs 5 pounds and her vet says they rarely get more than 6 or 7. They are very friendly too.
