Fasting is one of the 5 pillars of Islam.

Surah Al Baqara 2.183: O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you: As it was prescribed to those before you that you may (learn) self control.

Besides the fact that it is in the Qur'an there are other reasons as well - for health benefits ( to detox your body, to give your digestion system a rest) and to understand how less fortunate people feel when they don't have enough to eat.

Ramadhan is a special time of the year for Muslims to focus more on their Islamic duties (prayers, supplications, etc.)

It is about self control and discipline. Sigmund Freud believed those things were all that kept you from being an animal. Muslims enforce and demonstrate this control by not eating. Its tough to fast for even a day so I have to hand it to them that this is indeed quite an accomplishment.

I'll take a stab at this.

Since most Arab countries are in poorer, desert-ridden parts of the world, there wasn't always enough food to feed everybody. So Muslims got the idea, "Hey, what if God told us not to eat for a whole month? That would work, wouldn't it?" I mean, what is easier to deal with psychologically? "I'm fasting?" Or "I'm starving?"
